1st Annual NEHA Excellence in Sustainability Award was presented to the City of Plano, Texas 8/13/2008
The City of Plano’s Live Green in Plano initiative was awarded the 1st Annual National Environmental Health Association’s (NEHA’s) Excellence in Sustainability Award on June 22 at NEHA’s Annual Educational Conference & Exhibition in Tucson, AZ.
Live Green in Plano created a culture within the organization that advanced sustainable building practices in both commercial and residential development, as well as future remodel and re-development projects. The City of Plano adopted a LEED Certification Policy for city facilities, initiated a regional green building roundtable, and established a committee dedicated to reviewing and recommending green building code amendments. “The City of Plano has embraced green practices and leads by example in the area of sustainability,” said Nancy Nevil, Director, Sustainability and Environmental Services, City of Plano. Breathe Easy, Air North Texas
As the only Collin County participant, the City of Plano proudly announces its charter partnership with the North Central Texas Council of Government’s (NCTCOG) Air North Texas public education campaign.
“Air North Texas is an initiative involving both private and public sectors, along with non-profit organizations, to promote reducing emissions as a means of improving air quality,” said Janet Tucker, Environmental Health Specialist. Home Depot Kicks Off Nationwide CFL Recycling Program
June 24 -- Recycling compact fluorescent light bulbs just got easier. Home Depot announced it will offer free CFL recycling at each of its 
1,973 locations.
Customers can drop off expired, unbroken bulbs at the returns counter of any Home Depot store.
The home improvement retailer is beginning the program in response to customers´ concerns about improper disposal of the bulbs, which contain small amounts of mercury.
The national recycling program is the most widespread of its kind and offers an alternative to some existing options -- community hazardous waste programs and select retail stores, according to the retailer.
"With more than 75 percent of households located within 10 miles of a Home Depot store, this program is the first national solution to providing Americans with a convenient way to recycle CFLs," said Ron Jarvis, Home Depot´s senior vice president for environmental innovation.

Washington, D.C. -- It's the U.S. energy boom that no one knows about. Energy efficiency may be the farthest-reaching, least-polluting, and fastest-growing energy success story of the last 50 years.
